Ranchi: Seven-year-old swimming sensation Hemant Soren met the Chief Minister at the official residence in Kanke Road, Ranchi, where he was felicitated for his extraordinary achievement in long-distance swimming. During the meeting, the Chief Minister honored young swimmer Ishank Singh with a cheque of ₹5 lakh, along with appreciation and encouragement for his remarkable dedication at such a young age.
The meeting turned into an inspiring moment for the state as the young athlete shared his achievements and future aspirations. Ishank’s mother also interacted with the Chief Minister and discussed the challenges faced by talented swimmers in Jharkhand, especially the shortage of international-level swimming pools and professional coaching facilities in the state.

Record-Breaking Performance Brings Pride to Jharkhand
Ishank Singh recently created history by swimming continuously for 9 hours and 50 minutes on April 30, 2026. During this marathon swim, he covered an astonishing distance of 29 kilometers in the challenging Palk Strait between India and Sri Lanka. His achievement has drawn attention from sports lovers and officials across the country.
At such a young age, completing a demanding open-water swim in international waters is considered an exceptional feat. The achievement has not only brought recognition to Ishank and his family but has also made the entire state of Jharkhand proud. Sports experts believe that such talent, if nurtured properly, can shine at the global level in the future.

Chief Minister Assures International-Level Coaching
During the interaction, Chief Minister Hemant Soren assured the family that the state government would extend every possible support to help Ishank develop his talent further. He emphasized that children with exceptional abilities deserve the best facilities and guidance to compete on international platforms.
The Chief Minister directed concerned officials to prepare a detailed action plan for swimming training and sports infrastructure development in the coming days. He also assured that arrangements would be made to provide Ishank with advanced and world-class coaching support, including access to international trainers if required.
According to officials present at the meeting, the government is now considering steps to strengthen swimming facilities in Jharkhand so that more young athletes can receive professional training within the state itself.

Demand for Better Swimming Infrastructure in Jharkhand
During the discussion, Ishank’s mother highlighted the lack of quality swimming pools and trained coaches in Jharkhand. She pointed out that many talented children are unable to pursue professional swimming because of inadequate infrastructure and limited opportunities for advanced training.
In response, the Chief Minister suggested exploring options for training support outside the state, including Bhubaneswar, where better facilities are available. However, the family reportedly expressed reservations regarding relocation for long-term training.
Following this discussion, the government proposed upgrading the swimming facilities at Khelgaon and creating better infrastructure for aspiring swimmers. The move is expected to benefit many young athletes who struggle to access professional sports resources in the region.

State Government Plans New Sports Development Strategy
The Jharkhand government has now decided to prepare a broader roadmap for swimming development in the state. Officials have been instructed to work on improving training systems, coaching quality, and access to modern sports infrastructure.
The Chief Minister stated that the government wants to ensure that talented children like Ishank receive proper opportunities without financial or infrastructural barriers. He added that nurturing young talent is essential for building the future of sports in Jharkhand.
Sports department officials are also expected to coordinate with swimming associations and professional trainers to identify promising athletes from rural and urban areas alike. The initiative may include talent hunts, scholarships, and advanced coaching programs in the future.

Several senior officials and sports administrators were present during the meeting at the Chief Minister’s residence. Among those attending were Tourism and Sports Minister Sudivya Kumar, Chief Secretary Avinash Kumar, Sports Department Secretary Mukesh Kumar, Sports Director Asif Ikram, Deputy Director Rajesh Kumar, and Swimming Association official Shailendra Tiwari.
